Business Challenge

With Z-Wave home automation devices’ support in the smart IoT hub, client now wanted to expand its reach by integrating and capturing a wider range of smart home devices’ market as well. For the same, client was looking for Silicon Labs technology partner who can help them add Zigbee support to their home automation gateway (IoT hub) via Silicon Labs USB dongle enabling them to swiftly achieve their business expansion goals.

VOLANSYS Contribution

VOLANSYS offered firmware and quality engineering services for the client’s smart home gateway that is a part of home automation solution for residential properties. With Z-Wave devices support in the gateway, VOLANSYS widened the devices support by adding Zigbee connectivity in the smart home gateway with Silicon Labs Zigbee USB dongle. Our team worked on developing Zigbee application on client’s platform which will enable support of Zigbee devices via Zigbee USB dongle. We also performed functional validation and provided post delivery support. This enabled client to launch a new version of their product within just 3 months.

Embedded

  • Finalized the Rest APIs interface (between hub engine container and Zigbee Interconnect) and Silicon Labs USB dongle on which the Zigbee Network Co-processor (NCP) application is to be developed
  • Designed and developed the Linux based Zigbee application in the NCP mode, with the client’s IoT hub as a host platform. Added support for the
    following clusters in the NCP application

    • Thermostat
    • Alarm
    • Occupancy sensing
    • Temperature measurement
    • HVAC
    • Intruder Alarm System (IAS) zone
    • Color control
    • On/off and On/off switch configuration
    • Door lock
  • Develop Zigbee-Interconnect layer to send/receive REST API calls to and from IoT hub engine
  • Developed and complied with APIs on the host and client application to add/update/delete new devices and reading, configuring, and monitoring
    the parameters for the above mentioned list of clusters
  • Integrated Zigbee devices with standard profiles/clusters mentioned in the above list
  • Developed business application to validate the Zigbee application/interface using client APIs

    • Resolving field critical issues
    • Created technical documentation (release notes, user guides, etc.) as reference for client’s team

  • Setup test network with each Zigbee end devices connected to IOT hub and Zigbee USB Module
